Fireplaces are one of the most important parts to tying a room together. Adding some brick to your fireplace or even hanging up a mirror above your mantel can make a room look completely different. If you feel like your living room could use some sprucing up, there are several ways to dress up your fireplace to help give your living room a boost.
Change The Color
One of the ways to change up your fireplace is to paint it a new color. Black or white would both be classy options and could add depth or brightness to the room. You could also paint your fireplace in a similar manner to painting an accent wall. Painting an accent wall helps create interest in the room. You could also paint the wall behind your fireplace to create interest. Note that if you decide to paint the fireplace, it can be removed if you change your mind. However, it can take some time for the paint to come off and it may be expensive to completely restore so be completely sure if you want to paint your fireplace.
Add Texture
Another way to dress up your fireplace is to add texture. This could be with a garland of some sort or by setting a houseplant on the mantel. If the fireplace is just for show and does not actually work, you could also put flowers or decorative plants in the fireplace to fill up the space and add some color and interest. Another option for adding texture is to replace the interior of the fireplace with mirrors or tiles. Doing this could help create intrigue for a certain object you want to highlight or brighten up the space.
Fill It With Fun Things
What is important with any project is to have fun with it. Your fireplace was traditionally used to heat your home. Most fireplaces these days do not have a complex flume-based fireplace and either have a fake fireplace or gas fireplace. If you have a fake fireplace or flume-based fireplace then you can play around with filling up your fireplace with fun things. This could include candles, books, shelves, or flowers. Even if you decide to use wood, the traditional fireplace filler, you can spruce it up with a coat of paint or mixing up the wood with flowers or different types of wood.
Decorate The Mantel
The easiest way to dress up your fireplace is to decorate the mantel above the fireplace. This could be simply adding mirrors above the fireplace, or putting up some vases on either side of the mantel. The key with decorating your mantel is to have a balance. So if on one side of the mantel you have a large vase, then on the other side you might have some tall candles and a couple of books to keep it balanced. This does not mean that it has to be symmetrical, but it is probably not advisable to have all your decorations on only one side of the fireplace. You will also want some sort of anchor, or centerpiece, for your mantel. This could be a mirror or a clock or a painting. Just something that makes the mantel fit together.
