Exploring Common Mattress And Bed Sizes: How To Choose The Best Fit For You

Home / Archives for Furniture
mattress and bed sizes

If you’re moving into a new space, getting married, or simply want to expand your sleeping space, you may need guidance on choosing the perfect bed size for your needs. Finding the perfect-sized bed depends on a few factors, not just on the size of those using it. Here are some considerations that can help you choose the right size mattress and bed frame for your needs.

Typical Mattress And Bed Sizes

Before we get into choosing a mattress type, let’s look at common sizes and what they can be used for.

  • Crib: Best for newborns to young toddlers. 26 inches wide by 52 inches long.
  • Twin: Often used for preteens, shorter adults, or after a toddler has grown out of their crib. 38 inches wide by 75 inches long.
  • Twin XL: Used in dorm rooms or in apartments for taller adults. 38 inches wide by 80 inches long.
  • Full: Used for couples who don’t need a lot of space, single people with small pets, or as Murphy/pull-out beds. 54 inches wide by 75 inches long.
  • Queen: Best for homes with couples, adults, and those who have children and pets sleep with them. 60 inches wide by 80 inches long.
  • King: Best for those who like lots of room while they sleep or who have multiple children who sleep with them and their partner. 76 inches wide by 80 inches long.
  • California King: The largest mattress size available, which fits two adults, dogs, and children alike. It also works best for tall and large families. 72 inches wide by 84 inches long.

Height

Shoppers should first consider their height and weight, as well as anyone else who will be sharing the bed. While most mattresses are about the same length, except for crib mattresses, they will vary in width. Those who are larger may want to have more wiggle room during the evening, or may have pets or a partner sleeping in the bed with them as well. Full-sized beds could work for a single person, but Queen or King-sized beds are best for married or cohabiting couples, or single people with pets.

Room Size

While having more room to spread out during the night or relax after a long day seems appealing, a large mattress may not fit in your bedroom. Even if the mattress will technically fit inside the space, a bed size that is too large could restrict movement throughout the room, making it difficult to get ready in the morning or clean in the small spaces.

For example, King or California King mattresses will not look cohesive in an apartment or small home. The recommended room size for a Queen-size bed is 10 by 11 feet, while a bedroom for a King-size bed is at least 12 by 12 feet. Following this guide will help you fit the bed and other furniture pieces more comfortably

Those Who Sleep With Children Or Pets

Mission Furniture Sugar House Furniture Salt Lake City Utah

It isn’t uncommon for adults or teens to sleep with their pets at night. Not only do they feel more comfortable with their furry companions, but pets are often safer sleeping near their human counterparts. Other adults may have their young children sleep with them for a similar reason. Larger bed sizes like Queen, King, and California King will work best for those who want to have multiple people sleep with them at night.

Ability To Move/Adjust

Someone will need to move a mattress and bed frame into your living space, so choosing a size could also depend on the hallways, turns, and door height. If you want to make it easier on yourself or on movers, choose a mattress size that can be able to hauled through elevators, hallways, or garage doorways.

What Mattress Size Is The Biggest?

The California King is often regarded as the biggest mattress size; however, there is other sizes that have surpassed this type, including the Texas King, Wyoming King, and the Alaskan King. The Alaskan King is 108 inches by 108 inches, which is almost 20 inches more than the California King. Most home stores or mattress stores don’t offer this in-store, so they may have to be specially ordered or from a specialty mattress store.

Oversized mattresses are often not the best for single-family homes or apartments because of their size. Some specialty stores have crafted even bigger mattresses for families or people with disabilities. If you need these accommodations, you may also need to find a nontraditional home to fit the larger mattress.

Can A Full-Size Mattress Fit In An SUV?

Larger SUVs can accommodate a full-sized mattress, but it may require some maneuvering. No matter what size mattress or bed frame you choose, it is easier to haul them in a moving truck or trailer. If necessary, angling the mattress or folding it slightly can help it fit in your SUV for simple moving.

When it comes to quality furniture, the best way to ensure strength and durability is to choose the highest quality materials. There are many materials that are used for furniture, but one of the most timeless options is natural wood. Choosing wood furniture gives you the option to choose from a variety of grain types, colors, and hardness. Different wood varieties will provide a unique look to any type of furniture, especially if you choose strategically. This blog will discuss different wood types and what furniture pieces can benefit from that specific type of wood.

Hardwood Vs. Softwood

The first thing to note about different woods is the difference between hardwoods and softwoods. Hardwoods come from deciduous trees, which means they lose their leaves annually. Hardwoods are more durable than softwoods and can last for generations as furniture. Some examples of hardwood include oak, maple, cherry, and walnut.

Softwood comes from coniferous trees and is used for artistic pieces because it is easy to carve. Most furniture made from softwoods is more affordable than that made of hardwood. Some examples of softwood include pine, cedar, and spruce.

Oak

One of the most popular hardwood options for furniture is oak. It is a versatile option that has intricate grain patterns and comes in light shades all the way to a deep red. Oak is often used for flooring in high-traffic areas of a home, making it a great option for durable furniture.

One standout feature of oak is that it is resistant to decay. Prevent fungal and pest infestations that can cause premature deterioration of your furniture piece. Common pieces of furniture that utilize oak wood include:

  • Tables
  • Cabinets
  • Dressers
  • Chairs
  • Bedframes

Maple

A strong and smooth wood is maple, which can be easily stained or painted any color. Maple comes in dozens of species, spread throughout the US and Canada, so it is often easily accessible by carpenters and home builders. It is a common choice for furniture because of its cream color and smooth wood pattern, which allows the carvings and angles of the furniture piece to truly shine.

Maple is often found in bowling alleys and basketball courts as flooring, or in other unique places like instruments. Common furniture pieces that are crafted with maple include:

  • Workbenches
  • Butcher blocks
  • Tables
  • Coffee tables
  • Dressers

Pine

Exploring Different Wood Varieties For Furniture

This is one of the most widely available softwoods for furniture making, construction, and DIY projects. Pine is relatively lightweight, which means you can work with it easily and transport it without too much hassle. Similar to other softwoods, it is affordable and easily stained to your specifications.

Working with pine means it will be easy to cut and carve, making it the perfect choice for skilled woodworkers. Although not as durable as other woods, pine can be used in a variety of applications and remains durable if stained or sealed. Popular applications for pine wood include:

  • Decking
  • Tables
  • Shelving
  • Bedframes
  • Decorative trim

Cedar

Another weather and insect-resistant wood option is cedar. As another popular hardwood, cedar wood has an attractive aesthetic and can vary greatly in color options. As the wood is exposed to sunlight and oxygen, the color can change dramatically. Cedar wood often has a knotty look with straight grain, but this will depend on the specific tree and species you choose.

Cedar wood has been used for years to craft boats and canoes because of its durability. Today, there are many pieces that are made of a variety of cedar species, including:

  • Outdoor furniture
  • Chests
  • Tables
  • Picture frames
  • Siding

Spruce

The wood of a spruce tree can range from soft to medium hardness and is used widely in construction because it does not absorb moisture. It is an easy wood to work with and is usually readily available for construction projects, including roofs and bridges.

Most furniture pieces made with spruce have a distinctive grain pattern, but this can vary by species. Spruce has a white or yellow appearance, but when exposed to sunlight, it can darken to a yellow-brown.

Furniture pieces that can be crafted with spruce include:

  • Built-in shelving
  • Doors
  • Storage crates
  • Tables
  • Dressers

Cherry

A more unique option for wood furniture is cherry wood. This rich colored wood has a fine grain, making it easy to cut and giving furniture pieces a sleek look. Cherry wood is also a hardwood and does not shrink with humidity changes. The color of cherry wood can deepen over time when exposed to oxygen and sunlight, so if you want to preserve the original color, a stain or sealant should be applied.

Common furniture pieces include:

  • Tables
  • Chairs
  • Benches
  • Live edge furniture
  • Cabinets

Walnut

A highly sought-after option, walnut provides a deep color and fine grain for quality furniture. Walnut has a range of colors, but is typically chosen for its deep brown hue. One of the benefits of using walnut for furniture is that it is shock-resistant. If you have furniture pieces or areas of a home that are susceptible to wear, using walnut can help them last longer with extensive use.

Using walnut for furniture can come with challenges, such as tear-out on pieces with irregular grain patterns. Some furniture options that utilize walnut are:

  • Chairs
  • Dining tables
  • Bed Frames
  • Cabinetry
  • Smaller novelty items
  • Interior paneling

Mahogany

wood varieties for furniture

Another hardwood used for furniture is mahogany, which has a deep color, similar to walnut and cherry wood. Some say that it has a ‘cat eye’ effect, where some pieces will shimmer in the light. Mahogany can be easily cut, sanded, carved, or stained to create beautiful and durable pieces.

Some common furniture items made with mahogany include:

  • Doors
  • Paneling
  • End tables
  • Dressers
  • Bed frames

quality nightstands

Having high-quality furniture can impact the future of your home or apartment, especially bedroom furniture. Your bedroom should be organized, relaxing, and welcoming, which is largely helped by furniture. Quality nightstands can boost the appearance and functionality of any bedroom, no matter the size or design. Investing in a high-quality piece of furniture may seem like an unnecessary expense, but it can help with more than you initially realize.

The Importance Of A Nightstand

Functional nightstands are one element that helps to bring your bedroom together. These can be anchors that improve organization, design, and practicality. Nightstands are the resting/storage place for nighttime and early morning necessities like medication, sleep masks, chargers, snacks, or breath mints. Many people use these furniture pieces to store lamps, books, and phone chargers as well.

Nightstands also contribute to a balance of furniture in the room. Putting a nightstand on each side of the bed can help balance the aesthetics of the room and help the room flow. Choosing the right furniture will help everything blend and serve as a practical piece without damaging the overall look.

Choose The Appropriate Height

Choosing quality nightstands ensures that you can reach all your personal items, turn on the lamp during the night, or turn off your alarm easily. Quality furniture from a legitimate furniture store will allow you to take proper measurements and choose a nightstand that fits with the other furniture in the space. It is important to find an option that doesn’t dwarf your bed or other furniture in the room. Compare the nightstands to other options in your bedroom when possible.

Functionality And Aesthetics

Functionality is important for furniture across all areas of your home, but especially in a bedroom where you spend hours of your time. A cozy and inviting bedroom is important, but it should not compromise functionality. Choosing high-quality pieces will help the space feel elevated and avoid looking cheap next to other large furniture items.

Sugar House Furniture offers multiple wood and color options for nightstands. Our pieces can either be a focal point or the finishing touch on a room. Some of our options feature drawers only, drawers and shelving, or open shelving to help meet your unique needs. From modern to traditional, our nightstand options can work for almost any design.

Keep Your Space Tidy

The ultimate goal of strategically placed furniture is to keep the space tidy. Furniture pieces like dressers, shelves, or ottomans can help hide some clutter and keep the room tidy. These storage options will help you stay organized and prevent items from ending up on the floor or out of reach. Whether in the owner’s bedroom, guest rooms, or children’s bedrooms, nightstands can be the perfect storage option for small items, including charging cords, remotes, toys, lip products, glasses, or books.

Sustainability Concerns

Buying cheaper furniture options often means that you will need to replace or repair them more often. Investing in quality furniture pieces means that they will last longer, avoid dings and scratches, and prevent excess waste in landfills. Our furniture experts work to craft stunning pieces that will last for many years. Purchasing furniture that is a little bit higher in price could save you money in the long run and help those with sustainable goals.

Elevated Finishes For An Elevated Space

Quality nightstands will also have modern finishes in popular colors that can help your pieces look more expensive. Some nightstands can add value to your room because of the quality handles, drawer pulls, or accents. The right hardware can play a large role in how durable your furniture is. Well-attached hardware made with sophisticated materials will help your nightstands become a focal point in the bedroom.
